Hi, I'm James L. Hardeman. I've been a pulmonary and critical care physician for more than three decades. After years of inquiries from peers and patients as to how and why I lead such an active, health-driven lifestyle, I have written out my strategy for staying young and healthy. Some people chalk up looking good and being healthy to good genes. Others, to good luck. I attribute it to healthy habits. I invite you to join me in employing these achievable methods that will enable you to maintain healthy living for a lifetime.

Happy New Year! AYTSA Tip of the Day - There is no more important factor in looking, feeling, and being younger than maintaining IBW. Ideal body weight (IBW) is what you should weigh for your height and gender. If you’re there, stay there, and if not, get there and never leave.

If there was a rule that you could only own one car during your lifetime, you would probably take extremely good care of it. Well…this is the only body you’ll ever have.

Healthy people not only look younger, they are also often physiologically younger-in other words, their bodies function at a more youthful level, perhaps even down to the chromosomal level.

Appears younger than stated age … It’s an intriguing phrase that generations of doctors have used to describe that occasional patient who, as you might suspect, looks good for his or her age. It is also, not coincidentally, the title of my new book, Appears Younger than Stated Age, A Doctor’s Secrets on the Art of Staying Young. Lest I be accused of emphasizing style over substance, I am really trying to encourage better health. And it just so happens that healthy people look younger.

I have been practicing medicine for more than thirty years, not from behind a professor’s desk, but front line, hands-on patient care. I have interviewed and examined many thousands of patients and have counseled thousands on good health habits. My prescriptions for youthfulness are based on medical research, the lessons my patients have taught me and vice versa, and my personal odyssey of good health, all with a generous dosage of common sense. Too many books out there propose effortless magic formulas that sound too good to be true because they usually are. The only gimmicks in my book are simplicity, brevity, and the truth.

So, welcome. Each day I will post a fact or a bit of humble advice on healthy living. If you would like more detail, pick up a copy of my book. Find out how you, too, can look, feel and be younger than your stated age.
